Nicholas DunstanGaren, RP
Nick here. Behind every struggle is a story that deserves to be heard. In our work together, we’ll explore what lies beneath the surface and move toward something better.
I’m a Registered Psychotherapist based in Peterborough, where I live with my fiancé, our son, and two dogs—a doodle and a French bulldog. For more than six years, I’ve supported individuals through challenges such as relationship breakdowns, addiction, trauma, grief, and major life transitions. My experience spans both virtual and inpatient settings, giving me the perspective to meet people at different stages of their healing process.
I draw on evidence-based approaches including Mindfulness and Self-Compassion, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Each session is tailored to your needs rather than a single method.
One thing I’ve learned is that pain—whether rooted in trauma, loss, or addiction—rarely exists in isolation. It’s often connected to deeper, unspoken struggles. My role is to help you explore those layers with care and clarity. I also work with family members and loved ones who are impacted by someone else’s addiction or mental health journey.
This work continues to inspire me. The trust clients place in me is something I value deeply, and I’m committed to supporting real, lasting change.
When I’m not in session, you’ll often find me on the golf course, watching football, or learning the ropes of new fatherhood.

FAQs
How do I know I will connect with Nick?
Finding the right therapeutic fit is important. While I no longer offer phone consultations due to high demand and ongoing referrals, many clients have found that reading about my approach and areas of focus helps them get a sense of whether we’d work well together. I encourage you to explore my website and reach out if you feel aligned with what you see.
How will working with Nick be different than talking to family or friends?
First, having a healthy and supportive network of loved ones is incredibly valuable. However, when we are faced with sensitive issues, many of us can struggle to open up to those that are closest to us. This experience can feel extremely isolating and lonely. I offer an objective ear who is curious to understand your unique situation in the absence of judgment. I believe that we need open space to communicate our struggles to re-gain clarity as to how to move forward.
How do I get started?
Many who come searching for support already have enough on their plates. As such, all you have to do is book here and fill out the intake form that is prompted. At the time of our session, you will have received an invitation to a video call to which we will meet.
What to expect working with Nick?
My approach is gentle and understanding that life’s answers are best found from within. I will encourage and challenge you to dig deep and discover things about yourself that you may never have seen.
Will my benefits cover the cost of counselling?
Canada is increasing its recognition of the need for mental health support. As such, many insurance and benefits packages are covering the cost of psychotherapy. I encourage you to check with your insurance to see if they cover registered psychotherapy.
